Subject: Donating to West Potomac Crew

Dear Potential Donor,

The West Potomac Crew Boosters are beginning a campaign to fund what we are calling the WPCB Capital Fund. The purpose of the Capital Fund Campaign is to raise tax deductible donations to help us fund projected capital improvement needs over the next 5 years. The West Potomac Crew program seeks to make rowing possible for any West Potomac student. Our nearly 2000 students are drawn from an area that is economically, racially and ethnically mixed with the result that West Potomac High School serves one of the most widely diverse student bodies in northern Virginia.

Running a crew program is expensive and like other rowing programs in Fairfax County, we do not receive ANY funding support from Fairfax County public schools. Instead, we raise all of our money through dues and fundraisers. To support our $60,000 operating budget, we raise nearly half of this from dues, charging each rower about $675. This is a big fee for some of our families, but modest compared to other crew programs in the area. The other half of our operating expenses is covered with fundraisers which last year we raised nearly $30,000.

Despite our efforts, our income from dues and fund raisers is barely sufficient to cover our operating expenses, and is no longer enough to cover costs of needed capital improvements which we estimate to be approximately $150,000 over the next 5 years. These improvements include new rowing shells ($35,000 each), new launches ($10,000) and a new boathouse for storage (estimated to cost over $100,000).
